Alicia Sancho Scherich passed away peacefully at the age of 92 on October 6, 2026 with her daughter and son by her side.

Alicia was born to Mariano Sancho de San Jose and Asunción Medina de Sancho in Madrid, Spain on January 13, 1934. Sadly, her mother passed from complications during childbirth. Asunción was an opera singer. Mariano Sancho was a highly regarded and recognized Spanish painter who won the first gold medal for painting among many other awards. Her great grandmother, Ulpiana San Jose was also an accomplished painter and her grandfather Manuel Sancho was the first chair violinist in the Royal Orchestra in Spain.

Alicia followed in this great tradition as she graduated from the Institute of Professional Teaching for Women in Madrid with a degree in fashion design, sewing and cutting as well as doll and toy making. She studied drawing with her father who taught at the School of Arts and Crafts in Madrid. In 1959, Alicia married Ronald L. Scherich, an airman stationed at Torrejon A.F.B. in Spain. In 1960 the couple was transferred to Offutt A.F. B. in Bellevue, NE. Alicia continued her studies in various states over the next 30 years. She was commissioned for many portraits including the leadership of College of St. Mary's, Woodman of the World Executives, etc. However, she considers herself incredibly fortunate to have found Professor John Thein at Creighton University. Under Creighton's conducive environment and the guidance of Professor John Thein, Alicia undertook a monumental project she calls "World Peace". This stunning body of work consists of 18 oil paintings (4' x 6') on linen canvas depicting the positive and negative aspects of the human being. She was preceded in death by her parents Mariano & Asunción and beloved husband Ronald Lee Scherich.
