Mark Edward Laimans, a beloved husband, father, brother, uncle, and friend, left this world on May 21, 2025, in Omaha, Nebraska, at the age of 74. Mark was born on July 3, 1950, in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, and grew to embody the very essence of dedication, humor, and a love of family that leaves a profound legacy in the hearts of those who knew him.
A proud alumnus of the University of Wisconsin Eau Claire, Mark earned his Bachelor of Arts in History and English, where fate introduced him to the love of his life, Nancy Kowieski. They united in marriage in 1987, forming a bond that flourished throughout their years together, marked by shared laughter and an unwavering commitment to family.
Mark's professional journey traversed the transportation industry, where he dedicated the majority of his life to ensuring smooth journeys for others. Yet, it was not work that defined him. It was his love for his family that resonated most profoundly in his life. He adored his daughters, Sara Laimans and Julia Leinen, finding in their laughter and successes a joy that eclipsed all else. He embraced his role as a father-in-law to Drew Leinen, welcoming him into the family with open arms—a testament to Mark's loving spirit.
Beyond the confines of work and family duties, Mark’s passion for reading, the arts, pheasant hunting, and the great outdoors took flight during summers spent at his parents' lake house in Green Lake, Wisconsin and his brother's home in Bettendorf, Iowa. He reveled in moments shared with family, filled with games such as Rummikub, The Farming Game, and epic battles in Starcraft. With a keen eye for beauty, Mark ensured his lawn and yard were always at their finest—his proclamation of "The park is open for business" echoing in the hearts of those who delighted in his meticulously tended gardens and carefully stocked bird feeders.
Mark was known for his wicked sense of humor that could light up any room, and he had a rare gift for making everyone feel welcome. He was never one for the spotlight, often preferring to bask in the joy of surprising his loved ones, enriching their lives with his kindness and thoughtfulness. Whether grilling for family gatherings or embarking on scenic road trips to explore the vast beauty of the country, Mark consistently prioritized the happiness of those around him, cementing his role as the heart of his home. With his bright blue eyes and white beard, he was a living embodiment of Santa Claus in both love and generosity.
A true dog lover, his spirit will forever roam alongside his loyal companion, Maya, and in the playful antics of grand-dogs Chip, Popcorn, and Watson, and grand-cat Pippen. They were much more than pets to him; they were family members who added warmth and laughter to the everyday.
Mark is survived by his devoted wife, Nancy Laimans; daughters Sara Laimans and Julia Leinen with her spouse Drew; brother Roger and his wife Sue; and a cherished menagerie of pets that enriched his world. He joins in eternal rest his beloved parents, Elizabeth and Edward Laimans. Mark will also be missed by his extended family and friends.
In the tapestry of life, Mark Edward Laimans wove threads of love, laughter, and countless cherished memories. His legacy will endure in the hearts of those he touched, reminding us all to cherish family, appreciate the beauty around us, and embrace each moment with kindness and humor. The world shines a little less brightly without him, yet it will glow forever in the warmth of his memory.
A Celebration of Mark’s life will be held in Springfield in mid September. Details will be shared at future date. Kraken, anyone?
