Mary Carmelita Howe

Mary Carmelita Howe, also known to her family as Carmen (Carmy) Nutt went to be with her Savior on May 24th, 2026, after a battle with dementia for the past few years. She spent her last days in Hillcrest Shadow Lake in the memory care unit located in Papillion NE. She was loved by everyone there. As everyone knows she had a great sense of humor and playfulness.

Mary (Carmen) Howe was born on September 2, 1947, in Curtis Nebraska to Lynn & and Margaret Nutt. Originally from Curtis, NE where she lived and graduated high school. She was the youngest daughter of six siblings.

Carmen left Curtis after high school and eventually met Michael E Schrotberger out of Grant Nebraska. They later got married on March 18th, 1970, after Mike returned from the Army in Vietnam. They lived in Ogallala Nebraska where they raised three children, John, Rhonda and Gayle. They eventually moved to Papillion NE until they divorced in 1989.

Carmen once again found love and married Michael Howe Sr of Omaha NE. They got married on April 1, 1991. She helped to raise his two children, Michael Jr and Melissa (Missy). They were very happy for many years until Mike got sick and passed away.

She worked for a couple different insurance companies in the records department in Omaha Nebraska where she eventually retired and decided to move closer to her siblings. She bought a house in McCook where she enjoyed her time until she was diagnosed with dementia. She will be remembered for enjoying all her friends and family, which we are all going to miss. She loved crossword puzzles, stuffed animals and shopping for the best deals.

She spent the last year of her life with her daughter and son-in-law who took care of her until her hospice stay at Hillcrest.

Mary (Carmen) was proceeded in death by her parents, her oldest brother Gary Nutt, older sister Alice McEwan and second husband Mike Howe Sr.

She is survived by two brothers Lester (Mickey) Nutt, Louie (Janis) Nutt; one sister Janice Van Newkirk, her three children; John Schrotberger (Joel Placek) of Lincoln, Rhonda (Matt) Klinger of Papillion, Gayle Savatovic (Andrew Bradshaw) of Omaha with her first husband and three children; John (April) Howe of Clay Center, Kansas, Michael Howe Jr of Bancroft, Nebraska and Missy (Dan) Vraspir of Council Bluffs, Iowa with her second husband.

Her grandchildren; Sean (Morgan) Schrotberger of Elkhorn, Chase Ray (Emma Baumann) of Millard, Haijin James Honor (Skylar Wendel) of Lincoln, Allyson Ray of Lincoln, Haileigh Savatovic of Omaha, Zach Savatovic of Omaha, Skye Howe, Andrea Howe, Malana Howe & Mitchell Vraspir.

She also had three great grandchildren; Eve, Graham, and Lincoln Schrotberger; one great grandchild Dempsey Howe.

Carmen was strong to her faith and loved going to church. She enjoyed her time in bible studies and even in hospice care the pastor of the Lutheran Church locally would come and visit with her weekly until she was taken to her final resting place.

Her memorial service will be held on July 11th at 11:00 am with cemetery service at the Curtis Cemetery afterward. There will be a lunch after the cemetery service at St John's Lutheran Church, 504 Wallace, in Curtis Nebraska.
